Happy Fall Y'all! And A Give-Away!

For those of us in the United States and Canada, today is Labor Day. I actually wrote an entire post on the subject, went out to dinner, and then came home and trashed it all. Let me just say, that if you're so inclined and would like to read a really great article on the subject, WORLD magazine recently devoted a large portion of their August 2, 2010 issue to the topic of Labor and Work. It's not too late to go on-line and view the entire issue on their site for a small fee (just click HERE). And I would encourage you that if you could only read one article from the magazine, read Gene Edward Veith's Arenas Of Service. Two quotes from the piece that I loved were...

• "God doesn't need our good works, Luther said, but our neighbor does".

• "Luther said that changing a baby's diaper is a  holy work. A child doing his chores is outperforming the Carthusian monks in works of holiness."

I could quote the whole article, it was so good, but I'll stop there and just hope I piqued your interest! As homesteaders, I would speculate that most of us are not afraid of a good, hard day's work, but it certainly would benefit us to have a good understanding of why it's such a good thing! Especially if we want to pass on that work ethic to the next generation. Young people accustomed to living a "get it now" lifestyle will want a really good answer for why we work so hard when it would be so much easier to just go down to the store and buy whatever we want! Read the article or go study it, but be ready to give an account!

So, changing subjects... Labor Day has always marked the beginning of fall for me (even though it doesn't officially begin until September 22nd). Growing up in the South (many moons ago), we never started school before Labor Day. And in keeping with the changing season, we never wore white shoes after the holiday until the next Easter. Times may have changed, but it's so ingrained in me, I still feel like Labor Day marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall. That said, enjoy the new banner for a few months!

Storey Publishing Give-Away

Hopefully, as gardens begin to slow down, most of us will have a bit more time to read. And some of my very favorite Homesteading titles come from Storey Publishing. They have graciously offered three Homestead Revival™ readers one of:

Storey's Guide to Keeping Honey Bees by Malcolm T. Sanford and Richard E. Bonney

The Naturally Clean Home by Karyn Siegel Maier

The Complete Composting Guide by Barbara Pleasant and Deborah L. Martin

I recently did a review of The Complete Composting Guide, which I found to be an outstanding book on the subject. You'll find it is probably the best on the market. And the more I looked around their website, the more I realized most of my favorite titles were from Storey Publishing. Their books make fabulous resources for referencing on a daily basis.

Update: All three of the above titles are available in the Homestead Revival™ Amazon Bookstore! Any of your purchases through this portal supports this blog! Thank you!
