Give Away: Water Barrel and Pump

5 Gallon Water Drum
The give-away this week is sponsored by my favorite preparedness vendor, USA Emergency Supply. And the product they're giving away is related to an area I've had my mind on for quite some time... water.

If a natural disaster occurred for almost any reason, I'm guessing the first thing to go would be the electricity. But right after that would be gas and water. You can live without the gas and electricity a lot longer than you can go without water. We all know we have to keep a reasonable supply in order to meet our daily needs.

Drum Pump
So with that in mind, I've been considering what I have available to me in the event of an emergency and how long it would last. First, there's the water in your water heater. That's a good source as long as it isn't damaged and the water leaks out. Second, if you know in advance, you could fill your bathtubs. Great for hurricanes because you know ahead of time; bad for earthquakes because they're over before you can even think about the need for water. Third, there is water in your toilet tank (not the bowl) as long as you don't use any of those cleaners that hang on the inside. Finally, some of you are blessed to live where you have a small pond, creek, or other water source. You're in the minority.

Any additional water must come from a source that you've stored. So this would be an excellent area to work on this week for the Preparedness Challenge. Make a plan and then start working it. But first, research it a bit so you know what you need. And you can start with this give-away - a 5 gallon water barrel and pump!
