Today we come to the conclusion of our Sizzling Summer Round Up and our final give-away... Organic Beekeeping 101.
Randy Sue's DVD is perfect for those just starting out with beekeeping and for those wanting some great tips on how to keep bees organically. I had a chance to preview a good portion of this DVD at a beekeeper's meeting in my local homesteading group. Loved it! She made is look so easy. And the next time I went into my hive, I felt so much more confident and relaxed... I think the bees knew I was okay to be in there with them!
Randy Sue's not going to show you how to use conventional treatments for things like Varroa mites, but she will show you how to set your hive up and get started, basic equipment, capturing a swarm, inspecting your hive, and some other "must know" information for the beginner.
She also has a sister site (thanknature.com) where she sells a new type of hive... the Hex Hive. This is more than just a little hobby for Randy Sue! I love how she is trying to think like a bee and know their "bee-ness" (how God created them). The thought that has gone into this hive is impressive!

What a beneficial giveaway! I'm not ready for bees yet, but I will keep this video in mind for when I am. Good luck, everyone!
ReplyDeleteWow, oh wow!!! I have been pining for bees for two years, and i am hoping that next year will be the year. I watched all the clips and she's a wonderful teacher, isn't she? We live on one acre in VA, back in the country, and would like a few hives for my family's honey-health needs. The closest beekeper's group is well over an hour away, so regular attendance would be difficult. This video looks like a great way to dip my feet into the waters!
ReplyDeleteI just FB'd about it on my personal FB page!
ReplyDeleteAnd now, I have FB'd on my blog page!
ReplyDeleteI just tweeted...I think? (I don't do that much, but I think teh button did it all, lol)
ReplyDeleteI watched the clip on equipment and tools. To be honest, I never what those frames were actually for. How bad is that?! I also thought it was neat that the Hex Hive is designed to imitate a tree. How smart!
ReplyDeleteI just posted about the give away on facebook.
ReplyDeleteIt's all new to me so now I'm thinking about whether the spot we're planning on using would be best... I find bees so intimidating for some reason so I'd appreciate this dvd.
ReplyDeleteWow this looks like a great video. I didn't know that they need to be near fresh water but that makes sense. Bees are on the long list of things to add to our little Homestead.
ReplyDeleteWow this looks like a great video. I did not know that bees require fresh water to be close by, yet that makes sense. Bees are on our long list of things to add to our little homestead.
ReplyDeleteBees do intimidate me, but we have plenty of room for a bunch of hives (if I could persuade the rest of the family to do this.) I think it would be a great project for not only our own honey consumption, but to sell at markets too.
ReplyDeleteI did not know bees needed to face southeast. I'd love to win! ~Jill
Sorry the first time through it said incomplete action so I tried again and both showed up :) Anyway also shared this on my facebook page. On the Old Path. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI shared on FB. ~Jill
ReplyDeleteLove this giveaway, thank you! I just watched the clip on harvesting your honey and thought it was very interesting that she didn't use cheesecloth. We just had some major storms in VA and one of our 200 year old Oak trees split and the branch that came down had a massive bee hive in it. Some of it was left in the tree. We called our local beekeeping association and a beekeeper came out to move the hive and gave us some honeycomb. We used cheesecloth to strain it. It's the best honey I've ever tasted! My husband has a new hobby to consider... :)
ReplyDeleteI shared the giveaway on fb, thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the video, I've been hoping to get a hive, I know I'd feel much more prepared with this video.
ReplyDeletewell, I was a bit disappointed after watching Extracting The Honey, to see that there was so little honey coming out of SO much comb. It makes sense, however and will be worth the work as most good things are. (I say as I am making beef bone stock and scooping out the marrow, picking out the meat, and keeping the tallow for cooking)
ReplyDeletewould love to win anything that would kick my butt into gear to beekeep myself. I have a lovely patch of wildflowers that the bees would LOVE!
The honey that was shown in the clip was not from the crushing. It was just a sampling. You get much more than that from a frame of honey.
DeleteJust FB'd the link for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI posted the link on facebook.

What a great give away! Dad never used the bottomless frame, so that was something that I learned about!
ReplyDeleteYou've had so many great giveaways in the round up. I watched the clip on honey harvesting. I've never seen anyone mash up the honeycomb before. I always thought you wanted to preserve as much of the comb as possible so you could put it back into the hive for the bees to build out again quickly. I was left wanting to watch more.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know what nuggets people brought up at your homesteading group as new items they learned from it.
I will have bees one day!! lol
ReplyDeleteI watched a couple of clips...the intro to bees (I always thought they needed a shady spot...sun most of the day was good to learn) and harvesting the honey. She makes it looks so easy.
Please enter me in! This lady knows her stuff and makes it look too easy ;) I want bees soooo bad!
ReplyDeleteMy husband & I just bought 11 acres to start homesteading and plan to keep bees. This DVD would be so much help to us!! (kristyn@kristynhogan.com)
ReplyDeleteI was so excited to see this! Randy Sue is a big part of my local bee group- The Sonoma County Beekeepers Association- and I have learned so much from hearing her present and answer questions over the past year. I'm so happy to see her wisdom is spreading beyond Northern California! :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that bees needed full sun! Interesting! We would love to be able to get bees next spring. This series looks like it would be very helpful! stampintami at aol dot com (no spaces)
ReplyDeleteWe just got a hive from a friend, but I have yet to check on them, nervous I will do something wrong. This looks like the video I need to gain confidence.
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about beekeeping, so all of this was already great information. We're preparing our one, three, and five year plans for our homestead - and adding bees to it is a MUST! Thanks for the great info and giveaway! :)
ReplyDeleteShared via Facebook! Thanks Amy!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that extracting honey was such a simple process! Just crush the comb and strain. For some reason I had this image in my head with machinery and complex processes. My husband and I just bought land in Missouri to start our homestead (and a family) and are really excited to have bees for honey. Thanks for this opportunity Amy!!!
ReplyDeletep.s. I'll make sure to add you on Facebook too:)
We would love this DVD! My husband has been dreaming of getting some bees all year. This looks like a wonderful way to learn all about keeping bees. I will be sending him a link to this site so he can watch the video clips. Thanks, Debbie
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to keep bees for awhile now but some people say its hard and others say it's easy, I enjoyed watching what I could of this DVD and how she makes bee keeping seem easy. Watching her put the square hive together made me wonder, how easy would it be to make a hive, they can be so expensive! Need to be more educated! Would love to win this DVD!
ReplyDeleteJust posted about give away on my facebook page!! Hope to win this one!!
ReplyDeleteWow. I watched how to harvest the honey and how to place the hive. I have been studying bees, and this would be a great CD to have on hand. Thanks,
ReplyDeleteJonni in AZ, at kdaarch@msn.com
I watched all 4 of the videos, and posted to my facebook page for all to check it out. Am so excited to put to use the DVD.Never knew extracting the honey could be so easy. I've been looking at hives, just love the Hex Hive. Wanting to learn more.

I would like to win this DVD so I will be brave enough to conquer a fear of being stung by bees.
ReplyDeletekarentracy1@yahoo.com
Fascinating! I watched the Intro clip, hoping for a glimpse inside one of the Hex Hives. We've kept bees for 5 years now, and would describe ourselves as fairly organic beekeepers. I would love to win the DVD about it!
ReplyDeleteI also posted on FB about it.....
ReplyDeleteHi Amy, I love the synchronicity of your give-away. Today I watched not one, but two documentaries on colony collapse disorder: The Vanishing of the Bees and Queen of the Sun. {both excellent and a synergistic double feature.} These films inspired me to want to start beekeeping, so much so that I couldn't stop talking about it at dinner tonight. I would LOVE to have a copy of this DVD so I can help these amazing creatures. Thanks for all you do! I'm at lorasasiela@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteps. From the clips I learned that the bees need a runway....love that!
ReplyDeleteLoved the short preview segments on bee keeping. This is our first year, so we have much to learn, watched each available preview. Nice presentation, gave simple hints that are very helpful, would be the DVD would be very good! FB post up.
ReplyDeleteHello, I was very excited to see this dvd as a give away. I watched all the videos. I hope to win the dvd ans see it in its entirety. thank you for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI also tweeted about this giveaway...
I just started beekeeping 2 yrs ago the 1st year I lost my hive to a bear last year they didn't make it through the winter. This year so far every thing is looking great.I watched the clip on extracting the honey.. it is one method for getting the honey but I think I am going to build a homemade extractor so I don't have to ruin any comb.It does look like a informative video anyway and something can always be learned from another person.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed all of the video previews. We got our first honey this summer from our one hive and it was so exciting. Hubby takes care of it but I'd like to be more involved. We also had a swarm this spring and if we would have had another hive that would have been nice. Anyway, looks like a great video for me to understand and get to feel more comfortable about our "girls." Thanks for the giveaway. Lynda (lheines at wowway dot com)
ReplyDeleteI learned that my homestead just might offer everything a hive of bees would need, even space considering that the hive is small. I think I would rea;;y enjoy having beed and my own fresh honey!!
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness! I love the hexagon beehives she has designed. My friend and I were just talking about this today. I am going to post to her and my friends on Facebook right now!
ReplyDeleteociana40@yahoo.com is my main contact information.
ReplyDeleteGreat info...can not wait to read & learn more. Thanks for sharing with us!!We are looking at adding bees to our family farm.
ReplyDeleteHoping to start bee keeping next spring. Learned about facing the hive southeast. So much more to learn this DVD would help.

I watched all of the video clips. I've wanted to get into beekeeping, but it looked kind of complicated. I also thought you had to have access to specialized equipment to extract the honey. How about that; all you need is a strainer! I can do that! This video looks really great!
ReplyDeleteHello Amy, I love reading your blog and have your button on my blog but have been sad that if I were to choose to enter any of your giveaways I would have to be on facebook to see the winners. I realize your giveaways are over now but just wanted to give a little reminder that there are blog readers out there who choose not to be on FB.
ReplyDeleteWow - beekeeping doesn't look to be as hard as I imagined! I've been thinking of starting a hive and would love to win this dvd!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get started on my beehive. My husband and I are living with my parents so that we can save and begin homesteading by Janurary. We are in Florida so it's a great time to do so. I enjoied watching the film because it encourages me to move beyond the crowd and into the future of being connected to my necessities once again.
ReplyDeleteI clicked on the link to go to organicbeekeeping101 website to learn more about the dvd. There was no price shown so I clicked on the Buy The DVD button thinking I could find out the price. Instead it took me to paypal. I don't understand why the price isn't shown on the web page before buying. I looked through every page on the site and didn't find the price. Thanks for the info though.
ReplyDeleteI can't get the videos to load for some reason, but I have been looking into either having hives placed on our property or getting some of our own so these would be great in helping us get started:)
