Preparedness Challenge #27

Hello everyone! How are you doing this week getting prepared? I know a lot of people are canning this month, planting fall gardens, putting up season extenders, and purchasing other gardening items that are on sale as nursery centers hope to reduce stock for the winter. Be sure to share what you are doing with your garden this month! I have stuff planted, but still struggling getting seeds to sprout despite the day time temps being ideal. I think our nighttime temperatures are dipping too low (therefore not consistant enough) and it's keeping things from sprouting.

Three or four from my homesteading group are taking the CERT class and they have us making GOODY pack (they call them Grab and Go bags). Although I have a bag, this one will be a bit different since it will concentrate on items to help with light search and rescue in our area as well personal needs. My original supply concentrated more on getting totally out of the area. By the way, we had lightening for a long time again last night (with a bit of rain, too!) and while it sparked 4 fires in our county, none were in our area. Our wonderful firemen have had a VERY busy month!

I'm splitting wood today for our woodstove this winter. We were blessed to get wood from some downed trees from bad weather last year, but I need to get it split and stacked to see how much is really there. Last year, for the first time, we burned through all our wood. Perhaps that's a good thing... maybe that meant we didn't run the heater much! This year, I know I need more to really be prepared.

Join the Challenge

To join the Preparedness Challenge, just write a post on something you did this week to prepare and then link up below or leave a comment. Even one thing a week adds up and it will encourage you to do even more! And by participating in the challenge, it will get you thinking about prepping on a regular basis. The three areas we are focusing on include:
food storage
• emergency preparedness
• sustainable living

Please be respectful of our challenge and only add a post on one of these three preparedness topics ONLY in order to retain the integrity of the link up event. I have enabled the "like" button on the linky and I'm asking readers to give a thumbs up to all blogs that are on topic! And be sure to take the Preparedness Challenge picture and add it to your blog so others know you're participating and hopefully they'll join up, too! THANK YOU!!

  2. Hi been a while since I commented, hubby got out finally and has been busy getting things done. This week we have been thinning the forest on our property, especially that closest to the house to give the trees remaining more room to grow and to make it less of a fire hazard. Arranged to have a man come out to show us the proper way to handle and use guns and a safety class on them also. Will be picking up a second milk goat next week after we get back from my son's house. Making sure all our teeth are in order and cared for properly. This last has been a huge expense for us since we both needed crowns, but our dental runs out when his retirement is official so we need to get it done now while we have the insurance. I have used up all my benefits and we are now working on his teeth. I know it doesn't seem like prepping but it is actually because we need to save our teeth as long as we can. I have made arrangements with the dentist to get the rest of teeth taken care of for 10% off since we will be paying cash. But I did get 3 crowns and a root canal this year with the benefits we had(there is a limit on the amount you can get done yearly on our dental plan. We are also going to figure out if it is worth paying the extra for continued dental or to just pay the dentist and get the 10% off. Most of what I have left is minor repairs, which surprisingly our previous dentist never picked up on. On of my teeth was cracking and they noticed this in the cleaning and initial visit. My old dentist never picked it up. I now have a crown on it and possibly no need for a root canal, hopefully that is, it is still hot/cold sensitive since it was recently drilled so we are hoping that clears up. Hubby is out thinning the woods more today while I am canning broth I made from chicken backs and necks from the chickens I processed earlier in the year. We have a half of pig coming in October and need room in the freezer so I am trying to can up as much as I can from the meat we have in there. Oh and my chickens started laying , at least 3 of the 11 are and the rest will be soon I am sure. They are almost 5 months old now too so that is about right on time.

  5. Country Gal and Liz, I just got my copy of Mother Earth News and they have an article in there on firewood. May not be new information to anyone, but for someone who is new to cutting firewood and stacking, etc. it might be a good read!

  6. I canned a batch of peach butter and a batch of zucchini relish last week. Canning chicken tomorrow. It's so addicting, I love to open my cupboard and see all those jars!
