USA Emergency Supply Give Away: Solar Powered Emergency Radio And Light

USA Emergency Supply is hosting a great give-away this month... how about an emergency light and radio that runs on solar power? Sun Tap Ultra Solar Dynamo is a great item to keep on hand... just in case!

Having a solar powered light and radio can go a long way to put your mind at ease during a crisis. When all the power in your area is gone, having contact with the "outside world" is huge! Just hearing a voice on the radio can be comforting, but getting information you need is crucial. And this device will help recharge your cell phone as well. Whether or not you still have cell service in an emergency depends on several conditions, but you're more likely to have it working than your land line and perhaps it will help you contact loved ones or help.

I keep a solar powered radio in the window of my pantry at all times so that it is constantly being recharged and ready to go. Earthquakes, tornados, and recent floods are almost always a possibility, so you can't wait to be prepared. But emergencies aren't the only time a solar powered light and radio is needed.

The other night as I was laying in bed, the coyotes were going crazy around my chicken coop. Suddenly, I was not confident that we had actually gotten in all the hens and closed the coop door. Being in the country and no lights installed yet on the hen house (it's on the project list!), it was totally dark out and I couldn't see without a flashlight. And of course, I couldn't find our big high powered flashlight that I use for just this purpose (someone who will remain anonymous didn't put it back where it belongs! Ever happen at your homestead?). At that point, ANY flashlight would do. So it's nice to have a back up.

Another consideration are the batteries. I don't like going through them so fast with the other flashlight, so having a light that recharges with just the sun seems so much more economical and green. In fact, it just might become my first choice in the future!

Needless to say, if you don't win this giveaway, you still need a solar powered light and radio. Consider making just one purchase a month to help your family become prepared and in a year, you'll be well on your way to being equipped to meet your basic needs.

1. Visit USA Emergency Supply and check out all their radio and light options. Be sure to read more about the Sun Tap Ultra Solar Dynamo and tell me a feature on it that you feel is important to have in an emergency (I haven't told you all it's features yet, so you'll want to check it out).

  2. I like the crank for quick recharge. I am an "anonymous" follower (so I hope that counts)ever since I've changed my blog to private. Prevents clicking on my icon just to find I'm not available and being all like, "what's up with that?" :o)

  3. I love that it has a hand crank option in addition to the solar power option. The strobe light for emergencies would be handy. This would be a great flashlight to keep in our car when traveling too! Our power here in town cuts every now and then and I always wonder if the flashlights will keep up if we have to use them and cant get more batteries.

  4. I love the idea of the whole product being solar powered, but I think the best feature would be the radio so you can hear what`s going on in the news! What a great giveaway. Thanks for the chance.

  5. Having the hand crank option is a great idea for the possible gloomy days ahead. I would still want to have it power up even if there was no sun out to charge it.

  6. I like that you can charge a cell phone with it. And that it will can be charged different ways if stored in the dark for a couple years :) Great giveaway!

  7. Wow! That seems like a great flashlight. In an emergency, I think it would be great that there are so many ways to charge the battery. Redundancy is a good thing!

Also, the ability to use the hand crank to charge a cell phone would be a great asset.

I enjoy the blog -- and this is a great giveaway!

  8. I love that you even use it to charge your cell. Also that it can charge even while it's inside, not just out in the sun.
    THANKS for a great giveaway!

  11. I LOVE that it doesn't need batteries!! I despise buying batteries... I am constantly replacing the ones in our conventional flashlights. This would be great to use all the time- emergency situation or not!

  12. Are the rechargeable batteries in this Solar flashlight/radio removable in the event that they wear out and need to be replaced? I had a hand-crank flashlight several years back and when the built-inside rechargeable battery quit working (that does happen after a few years) I had to throw the whole thing away.

  13. I've had an emergency light/radio on my wishlist. This is cool that it would also charge a cell phone. Great idea for next Christmas too!

  14. I love this kind of thing! We have a little hand crank light, but it seems to take a lot of cranking to get much light. I like that this has so many power options. You can plug it into your car, or crank it if needed.

  16. Jimmycrackedcorn - that's an excellent question. I've emailed USA Emergency Supply for an answer. I'll post their response here when I get it. I will say, usually, where there's a will there's a way, but not 100% of the time.

  21. Amy, Thanks for sharing about this. I've actually been talking about this with my dad. Given the recent n ews reports about crazy weather, it's important to be prepared. I looked at that solar-powered flashlight on the USA site...and two things stuck out for me...very important 1) in addition to charging it with solar power, you can also generate power by turning the crank handle...very important...and you burn a couple of calories at the same time 2) it can be used to charge cell phones. SUPER IMPORTANT...especially if you need to make a phone call during an emergency and you don't have access to an electrical outlet. It's a small item with lots of functions!!! LOVE IT!! Thanks!!! Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :)

  23. Jimmycrackedcorn,
Good news! The batteries ( C ) are replaceable, so you wouldn't need to throw this one away!

  24. Thanks for brining this one to my attention! We have a hand crank light, but the thought of having access to the "weather band" makes it nice to know what is going on, especially when the power is out.

  28. Great giveaway! I was just looking into getting an emergency solar powered light. With this one though, I love the fact of the siren and the solar powered. I can't believe how much stuff they got into this dandy light. Aslo when the power goes out the radio would be great to have around to know how things are going. Thanks for the consideration.

  29. Amy I appreciate you finding out! Thank you. I had looked at the description on a few other web sites and it mentioned that the "battery" (singular) was a type without "memory" issues. It also mentioned that you could use regular disposable batteries when you wanted to, but it still wasn't clear if they were talking about two separate battery compartments, a built-in, or what. Again, thanks for checking that out.

  38. What a great idea ~ and I love this store too! I always have a flashlight on my nightstand, as living in New England, especially in the Winter, we can lose power. You never realize how dark "night time" is, until your power goes off! This would be great to have on my windowsill, catching sunbeams during the day, and being ready for a power outage!

  39. I love multiple energizing options, that's super! It can always be charging with even inside light, very cool.
