Barn Hop #9

It's Monday... let's Do-sa-do and hop on over to some homesteads for a visit! Join us, won't you?

and Me!

Write a blog post on what's happening at your homestead, something you've learned recently, or something homestead related that will benefit others and then come back here and link up (please link directly to your post, not your homepage). Don't forget to help cultivate the community further by including the red Homestead Barn Hop logo on your post so others will have an opportunity to read some great posts.

Thanks to all 83 of you who participated last week! Wow! What an awesome week!

Here at my own homestead, it was a sad week in terms of chickens... we lost 3. Two to a coyote. We spent some time this week shoring up the back side of the run after we clipped their wings and now, all the girls have been staying in the chicken yard ever since.

The girls enjoying one last treat before the new chicken wire covers the area.
We dug a trench, added chicken wire and sunk it into the ground.

Bees are arriving Tuesday! I got my hive in place, although I may end up moving it. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this... I put it in the corner of my vegetable garden because I was concerned about putting it outside the fenced area due to predators (I also ordered some Nite Guard lights to help protect it). I'm concerned it will be too close to where I'm working every day.  What do you think?

Bee hive in corner of the garden.
I will be tilling this area soon!

Please keep in prayer those who were effected by the recent tornados this week, especially those who lost loved ones. It will be some time before many will be able to return to life as "normal". A challenge to say the least.

Now it's your turn to link up!

Please Note: As hostesses of the Homestead Barn Hop, please understand that we reserve the right to remove any links that are not family friendly. While this may be subjective, we will err on the side of caution in order to keep our blogs appropriate for all readers. Thank you for your understanding!

  1. So sorry about losing your chickens, Amy. I think the steps you took to protect them should really help minimize future losses. :)

  2. Sorry to hear about your chicken loss. I love your bee hive. I had hopes of having a top bar this year myself, but it didn't happen. Thank you for your prayers regarding the tornadoes. The one here in Virginia missed us by about five miles, but did destroy my cousin's home. Thank goodness they are safe. He, his wife and three year old son huddled in the laundryroom. It is heartwarming to see a community cometogether in the wake of such a tragedy. There is still plenty of love, kindness and charity left among us all.

  3. Hi Amy,
So sorry to hear about your 3 chickens. Thank you for sharing your solutions. You must be so excited about the bees! I can't wait to hear all about them. Have a wonderful Monday and thanks for the hop!--Melissa

  4. Amy,

I've only read about bees, hoping to get some next summer as well, but I would be a little concerned about having them that close to where you work and especially a lot of noise. They could get 'spooked'.

What predator is stupid enough to take on a hive of bees?? :)

Curious to know what works for you, I'm taking notes!

  5. Hi,

Our bees aren't real close to our garden, but we often see them there and we've not had any problems or stings so far. We also walk right past them daily when moving the cows and haven't experienced any problems.

    Blessings,

    Sherry

  6. I keep my bees next to my garden. I like seeing them and it's easier for me to keep them watered. It doesn't seem to bother them and I've only been stung once.

  7. I'm so excited about your bees! I can't wait to watch as you learn how to keep them. We'll get there one of these days :)

  8. I am so excited about your bees...!! I was wondering...I read somewhere, I think, that they need a shaded area? Is this true?

  9. Sorry about your chickies. : (
We have a large Catalpa tree that had a bee hive in it. It was right near our driveway. We never had a problem with them...us getting in their way, or them getting in ours. We're a bit concerned, though, because we haven't seen one bee yet. Even a few weeks ago when it was in the 80's (now it's 40's). Years past they would come out on nice days and when it got chilly they would go back in for a while. Concerned about our little pollinators. : ( I think next spring we'll be getting a hive, too.

  10. So sorry about the chickens! I've been watching a red fox in our back yard and wondering if it's going to carry off the kittens.

I have quite a few bees of various sorts in my garden and never gotten stung. They're all pretty intent on getting to the flowers, not me. :-) I've even bumped or brushed them out of the way (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not).

  11. Amy,

I'm SO sorry to bother you with my question, and I understand if you do not have time to respond. I haven't been able to figure out how to link directly back to a specific post when leaving an entry for your Barn Hop. I apologize for not getting this right. Can you tell me how to accomplish this or point me to directions online? I've searched, but I haven't figured it out. Blessings:)

  12. No problem! After you write your post, go to your blog and click the title of the post that you want to link to. The page will automatically refresh itself. Now go up to the URL at the top and copy it. You'll notice that it includes soem of the words in your title. That's because it is only that post on the page below. This is the URL that you want to paste into the linky here at the Barn Hop. And that's it! It's really very easy. Thanks for linking up!
