Oh, yes! You read that correctly... All four of Ashley English's books for one blessed Homestead Revival™ reader! Thanks to Sterling Publishing and Lark Crafts.
I've been so impressed with this series of books and I would highly recommend them for anyone starting on an adventure on any of these four topics. Since I've already reviewed Keeping Bees and Home Dairy, I'd like to point out a few things I liked about Canning and Preserving as well as Keeping Chickens.
Both of these books follow Ashley's signature style of being organized and appealing to the eye; the photos are wonderful, but the information is great and simple to access quickly. There are plenty of easy to scan insets and even some check lists and other great resources in the back.
Canning and Preserving teaches readers basic canning principles, clearly outlining tools, ingredients, and procedures. There's sections on whole fruits and vegetables, another on jams, jellies, and preserves as well a one on pickles, relishes, and chutneys. Want tips for hosting a canning party? That's in the book, too. And I really liked the recipe section that was divided up into the four seasons proving canning isn't just for summer! Each season has about 5 recipes that vary from traditional favorites to the unusual and unique, such as Fig and Thyme Jam!
Someone should have written a chicken book like Ashley did year's ago! Keeping Chickens addresses all the really important things you need to know to get started with poultry, things that I had to dig to find that are super easy to access in her book. If you are just starting out and you want to select the right breed, Keeping Chickens provides plenty of information to help you make the right choice. There's a plan for a chicken tractor, plans for nesting boxes, and photos of Ashley's coop along with some others. Feed (along with photos) is explained, broodiness in chickens, and poultry health. But one of my favorite things was a guide to color eggs with natural ingredients! I love how it produces such soft colored eggs! The book concludes with recipes and a chicken care checklist for daily, weekly, monthly, biannual and annual care.

ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to have this set! I have chickens and a garden and I enjoy canning so to have books offering tips, tricks and recipes would be grand. ReplyDeleteWow, this set would be great for my home library....we have had 2 chickens since November, a rooster since February and are gearing up for a few more hens.
ReplyDeleteI haven't canned since our children were young, but plan on adding that to my summer. The book on beekeeping would be great to use for research, I know nothing about the subject. As for the Home Dairy, well I haven't ruled it out, but our property might be difficult for caring for livestock, but I'm still scheming how I might make it work!
I love your blog, just recently found it and will be reading more of your older posts as time allows.
Blessings,
Denise
Oh my WORD! I would absolutely LOVE to own these books! I have taken Home Dairy out of the library and have the others requested, but I can see how important they would be to have on hand for continual reference. :) Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Again,

ReplyDeleteI would love to have these books. We already have chickens, but plan to get bees one day. I prefer to look up info in books than on the internet, and these books look lovely. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to do more and more on my own and would love to have this series of books. The canning book looks far more helpful (with photos!) than the Ball Blue book. And I have chickens and hope to get bees and a dairy source. Even without my own dairy animals, I want to learn to make my own dairy products. Please enter me in your drawing.

I would LOVE these books! We are fairly new to the homesteading life...about 9 months ago we purchased our mini-farm. We got our first flock of chickens 6 months ago, and are about to get more chicks. We have been purchasing raw milk from a local licensed farmer, and I've been slowly learning about culturing milk. This is an area I would LOVE to learn more about.
