"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
~ Philippians 4:6-7

ReplyDeleteHello Amy
ReplyDeleteI have been contemplating this scripture a lot lately and have wanted to ask you a question - so when this was your post today - I decided to go ahead... I wonder how you balance it's message with all your emergency food preparations? The thought of mylar bags etc. makes me anxious not reassured. How do you find balance?
Cheryl
A lovely post, Amy... Shalom to you as well!
ReplyDeletebruinwerks, I appreciate your honest question. And I confess, it's not always easy. Writing down my thoughts (or rather blogging them) helps me to constantly rethink these issues and re-evaluate them. And then I run them by my husband who is very grounded in trusting God, and I ask him what he thinks. Preparing doesn't always mean you're not trusting God, although for some it could mean exactly that! For me and others who chose to prep from a Biblical basis, preparing is just another means of being a good steward. As Christians, we constantly talk about being good stewards of our money, but why not our resources or our food?
ReplyDeleteGod could call any of us home in the blink of an eye. We're not adding one day to our life that He has not already ordained. But for the time He chooses to leave us here, we are called to be good stewards, ready for good deeds, and to share the gospel. This is just one way that we can fulfill that call.
Let me give you an example. The Southern Baptists, Samaritan's Purse, and other organizations have participated in relief work for YEARS! They stock supplies and organize people year 'round in the case of an emergency. We call that being a good steward and a ministry opportunity. Why is it unbiblical for an individual to be prepared in the same way on a local level - to care for their family, their neighbors, and their friends? (Or perhaps we will be the one in need and need help from our own neighbors). When we were an agricultural nation (before the industrial revolution and the newest "technology" revolution), people WERE prepared - as a way of life! It was the norm. They prepared and trusted God for the outcome, whatever it might be. The food stores and resources set aside were only viewed as tools God might choose to use.
I believe MANY people are right were you are, struggling to reconcile the two. I've had to work through this myself because this was NOT a concept I grew up with nor did I really consider it until about two years ago. But the more I study the Word specifically related to this topic, the more I'm convinced that it is Biblical.
Thank you for asking! I pray that God will make His Word and His will clear to you - He is not a God of confusion and He does not want you to be anxious.
One more thing... I have written several posts on this topic and you will find them on the right sidebar under topical index. From there, look for Prepping Index.
