Ever have one of those eureka moments that rings true in your heart? The minute you hear it, wisdom is speaking to every part of your being? I know I'm sounding a bit "mystical" here, but I think you know what I'm talking about.
Watching the documentary Back To Eden this week, the message I heard rang true again and again as I listened to Paul Gautschi recount what he has learned over the years from the Lord about gardening. It seemed that all the various things I had been reading, researching, and learning over the last few years about gardening was coming together in one harmonic symphony.
Techniques and philosophies that seemed so difficult and unnatural to growing plants were revealed as exactly that... a heavy yoke. And yet, freedom and the ability to garden as my body aged seemed possible once again. Perhaps that is what has sparked my enthusiasm to tackle the garden again this spring!
I don't want to diminish the impact of this movie by telling you much more at this point. You need to hear the message from Paul himself. The movie is free to watch on line or you can purchase a copy through Pantry Paratus.
I've had several conversations with Chaya, owner of Pantry Paratus, and I can tell you that this subject is near and dear to her heart (and her husband!). So much so that they are planting a five acre garden at their church to help others learn to grow their own food. They also made the decision to carry this DVD in their store to further promote it's message to others.
Enter the Give-Away
Chaya is hosting a give-away today for a copy of Back To Eden. To enter this give-away, we're doing something a bit different. Those who sign up to receive the Pantry Paratus email newsletter will be entered in the drawing. You can do so either on their website (at the bottom of the page; right corner) or their facebook page (on the left side bar, fourth line under the big canning jar). She will be sending out a coupon to those on her email list very soon!
Once you've entered your name for the newsletter, please come back here and let me know you've done so - otherwise, I won't know and can't draw your name as a winner! Chaya will verify the name that is drawn and get the DVD out to the winner.
This give-away ends Friday, February 3rd at 11:59 p.m.
I'm thinking this DVD would be great to show to homesteading groups, gardening clubs, 4H friends, church groups, family, .... the list goes on! Tomorrow, I'm going to talk a little about my own experiment to return "back to Eden"!

I am experiencing difficulties opening their Page. I will keep trying. I love the sound of the Back to Eden. some people laughed at us and our garden... said you can't grow anything where we live (hard frost each month!) but they didn't laugh at our mammoth sized cabbages, broccoli, beets... ha ha!
ReplyDeleteIf my site is sending them lots of traffic, it could be overloaded right now. You might try again later.
DeleteCount me in! I saw the movie on his website and loved it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the link to this site. My husband and I watched the movie and then decided to purchase a copy. We've been getting so tired of all the work and not much in the way of results, plus being in So Cal and on a well all the water it takes to keep our orchard and gardens going!!! I am really anxious to get started, so I'm heading outside to throw some weeds to my chickens right after I finish typing this : )
ReplyDeleteI will be really interested to hear about your experiment Amy. I watched the movie and found it all very interesting and I'm wondering how it could work in our climate. Too much rain this summer has turned many of my vegetables to mush before they matured and split the tomatoes. I love the idea of less toil but I've always been wary of using woodchips on gardens near the house because of the termite problems we face. Snakes love to hide in mulch as they like to have a covering too and we have some highly venomous ones. Great care is needed when working with mulch. Do you have a problem with birds? We sure do in our orchard but hanging up a dead crow is not the solution for us as many of the birds that peck our fruit are native and protected as are the bats. I would love to hear of some of his other solutions for pest problems. Not using crop rotation was another surprise. I'll have to show my husband this later - but thank you for letting us know about this film and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the methods he employs.
ReplyDeleteAnn, sometimes I think that there can't be too much rain (living in this arid place), but then comments like yours remind me that you can have too much of a good thing! According to Paul on the video, the wood chips absorb the extra moisture, but logic says the chips can only absorb so much. As far as termites, I would think they wouldn't be attracted to wet wood, but I could be totally wrong on this! And snakes... hmmm... my thinking is these chips shouldn't be so big as to allow them to hide under them that easy unless they are small baby snakes. In which case they are probably going to seek a warm dry spot, not a wet one. Again, I'm no expert and I could be way off here.
DeleteAs for birds, yes, we have bird issues. Quail get seedlings on the ground and flying birds get other stuff. Lots of bird netting around here!!

ReplyDeleteI signed up for the Pantry Paratus newsletter. I can't wait to see this. We have satellite internet so most attempts to watch video over a few minutes lock up the computer. We, too, get a lot of rain much of the time. We flooded seven times in six weeks this past spring drowning half our chickens, breaking down fencing, etc. Our cows head to higher ground. Our entire garden along with the wood for the raised beds were washed away so we've started over. Hopefully we'll learn something. :)

ReplyDeleteI just signed up for the newsletter and am in the process of watching the movie (during homeschooling breaks today). What an amazing film! So excited to put it into practice when we start our farm this year!
ReplyDeleteI subscribed, hopefully not too late. I watched the movie and would love to share the oh so simply concept with any that will listen. It was for myself like with you; an ah ha moment. I've been leading up to this not really knowing where it was headed. The more you cover the ground the better the wanted plants where doing. Now I can move forward with confidence that I'm not harming my soil. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI learned of Back to Eden Film from you early this spring. My husband and kidos hurried and covered our grass with woodchips so we would be ready for planting after the first frost date. I am loving the results and love telling people about the film. I would enjoy a copy of the film to share with the many folks who have dial-up out in the country.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. We are eating the results and enjoying them.
