Give Away: Health For Godly Generations!

If you've read any of my Food Journey posts, you know that I started my homesteading adventures by reading Rex Russell's book What the Bible Says About Healthy Living. Russell has since gone on to be with the Lord and yet, God has not left us without teachers to guide us. He has given others a similar vision to educate people in healthy food choices despite the mass amount of poor quality food on the market. And Renee DeGroot is a young lady for such a time as this!

I'm currently reading Renee's book Health For Godly Generations and I can say without a doubt that she has some wonderful insight into the theology and theory of food from a Biblical perspective! Her biblically reformed world view is woven throughout the chapters as she discusses thoughts we need to consider in order to make wise choices - lifelong food decisions that will effect our health and ultimately how God will use us in kingdom work. (Note: God always can and will use us as He sees fit - healthy or otherwise; however, being good stewards of what He has given us is pleasing to our Lord).

The subtitle of her book, "A Reformational Perspective", reflects her view of applying the whole and authoritative counsel of Scripture into every day life, including what the Believer eats. While she acknowledges we are certainly not subject to the Old Testament dietary restrictions for our spiritual standing before God (salvation), she does exhort the reader that we should be set apart by our food choices, gleaning from scripture and wise counsel, how we should treat our bodies and the kinds of foods we consume.

If you're just beginning your food journey into healthy eating, this book would be an excellent resource to help you understand why it's so important. If you don't have a good grasp of why you're making dietary changes, when things get tough, you'll go back to the old ways of eating. But once you've read Renee's book, I believe your mind will have been transformed so that you see food differently than you ever have before. And it will have practical results in your life on a day to day basis.

For those of you homeschooling and hoping to teach a home economics course to your high school student, Health For Godly Generations would be an ideal text to use in your class. Since it covers some of the practical aspects as well as the theology, your student would have a biblically balanced course and know WHY they need to make healthy food choices.

Perhaps you've been eating healthy for years, but just need a refresher as to why it's so important to do so. Renee's book would be a great review and just might inspire you to take it up a notch! Or, at least not to throw in the towel. Healthy eating is for life, an Renee will whip you back in to shape in no time! By chapter four, I realized I had slipped in a couple of areas and I needed to get back on track and remain committed to my health.

  4. Amy,
I am a newbie homesteading and whole food. This book appears to be a very commonsense approach to healthy eating from a Godly position.
There are two little ebooks available to download from her site. I downloaded both and will spend some time reading them.

  5. We are trying to eat consciously and healthy, but we are not where we want to be yet. I would LOVE to read a Godly approach to eating. Had never really thought about it that way before! I signed up for her newsletter. Thank you!

  6. I would love to win this book. I have always struggled with my weight and am now realizing that hormone issues go back to my teen years. I was one of the many children who grew up in the era of eating balogna sandwiches, Doritos and Pepsi for breakfast. Shameful. My son has many of the same struggles I have been plagued with and we want to change that. We are a homeschooling family and I would like to add a nutrition course this year. Renee's book would be very beneficial in helping us in our journey to better health.

  9. What an interesting book this appears to be. I've been on my own food journey for a few years now, but I'd never heard of Renee or her book. Good nutrition and creation care from a biblical perspective is important to me. Thank you for the opportunity!

  10. I would love to win this book! I grew up being taught that God didn't care what we ate and didn't really have anything to say about it anymore since Old Testament law didn't apply. It always left me confused. I would love to read her perspective as it relates to this. Our family recently began the journey to eating healthier.

  11. I am all for eating healthy. It is good for the health, our wallet and so on. But no disrespect please, but I get a bit troubled when people elevate 'healthy eating' to a kind of idol. Biblical eating according to the Old Testament means not eating pork or shrimp, but many 'healthy, biblical' eaters do. Does raising a hog yourself make it 'clean'. These are questions I have. Again, no disrespect, but I have gleaned a lot from you though our lives are different and would like to hear your thoughts on this if you so choose. Thanks

  19. I would love to be blessed with a copy of this book. As so many have already mentioned I struggle with health issues. I really want our family to eat healthy, but where do you start? In our town the stores are full of junk food but the choices of fresh foods are very limited and pricey. I sure could use a good guide on what to purchase and eat to benefit our health. As the Word says, we perish for lack of knowledge. Thanks for offering this and God Bless.

  27. Anonymous, I whole heartedly agree that we should not make food an idol. And we are no longer required by O.T. law to abstain from unclean foods for the purpose of being set apart and for spiritual righteousness. It is not a sin to consume pork, shrimp, or other "unclean" foods.

That said, God's purpose for having the Israelites abstain from these foods included health reasons. Science has verified that the unclean animals listed are mainly scavengers and that their digestives systems are different than clean animals. Many feel that cooking them properly eliminates any health risks, but unfortunately that is not the case. There are still some toxins and other things that can not be eliminated from these foods.

That said, I still on occasion will have pork or shellfish, etc. I'm not bound by law and free to eat these foods, however, I also know that God did not design them for human food, but rather as garbage consumers, and these foods are not the best choice. So day in and day out, I'm physically better off not eating them.

As far as raising your own pig, that would be better by far than eating pork from the grocery store where you don't know what it's been fed. But I would encourage you to do some investigation since it seems that their digestive systems are different and may cause them to retain toxins, etc. My husband shot a wild boar that we believed was feeding on wild grasses/shrubs, and we did eat it, but I would not want to make it a part of my regular diet. Hope this all makes sense and is helpful.

  28. What a wonderful book! God-honoring eating {and everything else for that matter!} is a passion of mine. For the last 4 years I have been very convicted about what to feed my family. 46. I have recently decided to be more intentional in my eating and to make better, healthier choices (i.e - fresh versus processed, more fruits & veggies, healthy fats). I've taken note of some of the bad eating habits I've already passed on to my boys and want very much to stop the cycle of unhealthy eating. I would love to win this book. 48. I read several of her articles online and she seems to have a lot of knowledge, and she seems to write very logically and plainly...not using scare tactics or overly dramatic words as some in the health food world do. I appreciate facts and logic over hype. I am definitely curious to read what she says, particularly the spiritual component.

  52. I already have 'Health for Godly Generations' and recently finished it. Probably one of the best books on health and nutrition I have read - she covers so many topics and puts everything into perspective. We were already inspired by Jordan Rubin's Maker's Diet and we chose to give up pork and shellfish - it is not a huge sacrifice but the health benefits have been immense. It's been over 5 years since we discovered wholefoods, sourdough, coconut oil and other incredible foods given to us by God. My twins are 6 this year and have never been to the doctor for reasons of sickness. That's good enough reason for me to stay on the journey.

  60. My husband and I always consider ourselves healthy eaters. We rarely ate fast food or junnk food. We ate a very balance diet but four years ago when our youngest son was diagnoses with Autism, we learn that it so much more than eating a blanced diet. Autism is a neurological disorder of the brain. Through reseaching Autism, we learn about eating organically, perservate free. We learn that healthy eating isn't just about feeding the body but more importantly feeding the brain properly. Toxins and junk foods are extremely harmful to the brain especially the brains of developing children. I read a book written by a Jewish doctor that outline why God told the Israelites to avoid certain foods and for the our son's brain health as well as our own health, we made the decision to avoid these foods. It doesn't mean that occasionally, we don't indulge but that is very rare.

I would love to use this book in homeschooling my (soon to be) 5 year old son! It would be an awesome way to teach him how the Bible can be used in our daily lives, in a practical way that his young mind can see and relate to. Raising him with healthy eating habits directly related to the Bible will surely have an impact on his life (and mine). Thank you so much for introducing this book!
