I've really been blessed to do some fabulous give-aways, and this one is no exception! Marjory Wildcraft at Backyard Food Production has graciously offered to give-away one of her Food Production Systems DVD along with the Bonus Resource CD!!
I recently had the opportunity to sit down and view the DVD and I have to say, it's well worth the price. The principals alone that Marjory has learned is enough to get any homesteader on the path of being more productive and sustainable than any resource I've come across. But then she goes further by showing you how she's doing it right on her own homestead, shares honestly her own mistakes along the way (always valuable to know), and then supplies you with the best documents she found for tackling each area.
I'm a visual learner (and statistically, most of you are as well). Having someone show me what they're doing gets in my brain a lot better than just reading about it. And there's lots to learn! So much so, that I'll be watching these over and over to glean from them. The DVD is broken down into the following segments:
• An overview of how she began her journey and her homestead's situation in terms of climate and soil
• Watering solutions - sources, harvesting, and containment
• Gardening - how she raises enough to feed her family, and I mean all of it!
• Rabbits as a sustainable protein source
• Home butchering (rabbits are done in detail and then a couple of other small animals are addressed as well)
• Poultry as another sustainable protein source (more for eggs than meat, but she does discuss meat)
• Dogs as a working animal on your homestead
• Perennials: Orchards, Food Forests, and Edible Landscaping (Permaculture)
• Other Essentials: everything from solar food dehydration to hog panels!
It really was helpful having Marjory share what didn't work for her, and I was encouraged by the fact that she didn't do this overnight. She's very clear that every homesteader should start small and learn from each step before jumping into something bigger. Honestly, I've wondered at times if being a sustainable homesteader was really possible in this day and age, but seeing what she's done on a small acreage with just a couple of hours each day to maintain what she's established has given me a renewed vision that it CAN happen.
During the video, Marjory will often reference a document that she's included on a separate CD for you to access. This is like getting a book of all the important, need-to-know information along with the DVD - primary sources! Some are from her state of Texas, but don't be mislead to think they won't help you. I spent some time going over the Texas Rainwater Harvesting document and it's an excellent 88 page resource for anyone, anywhere. It includes color pictures of examples along with detailed instructions for setting up your own system. All you'd need to do is find out your own state laws in order to be compliant locally.
Marjory doesn't just spend her time working on her homestead; thankfully, she still has a life apart from laboring to produce their own food. Besides being a wife and mother of 2, she speaks frequently about what she's learned to various groups. Recently she spoke at Brave New Books in Austin, Texas about "Why Your Grocery Bill Will Double This Year and What You Can Do About It", and it's free for you to watch on her site!

ReplyDeleteI like backyard homestead on fb
ReplyDeleteMarjory's book looks wonderful. I love her perspective of learning as you go and sharing it with others. My husband and I have dreams of moving away from the city with our two boys and to growing into a more self-sustaining lifestyle. This book looks like it would be extremely helpful to us with it's useful information and encouragement. Thanks sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteI also signed up to receive Marjory's newsletter.
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely love to have the DVD! We have a small homestead and though we raise and sell rabbits I have yet to butcher one. Didn't know how and was afraid to try. Her DVD would be a blessing in showing me step by step how to do this among many other homesteading things.

ReplyDeleteI have been getting Marjory's free newsletter for a while now, and it is always interesting and educational. My homestead is still in its early stages of development - we have chickens and goats, but my garden is pathetically meager - so I'd love to have this DVD as a guide. Thanks for the giveaway!

1. Oooh, I didn't realize rabbits were a better source of meat than chickens. I have wanted to raise rabbits for fertilizer but maybe we need to consider raising them for meat instead!

ReplyDeleteWow...what an amazing giveaway! I am definitely a visual learner...I'm much more able to grasp things when SHOWN how to do it. Count me in!
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Backyard Food Production has been on my "want" list for a while now. I am especially interested in the info on perennials and rabbit production. I had angora rabbits for a little over a year and my husband was less than impressed. I thought we could use the extra kits as a meat source but overall, they just weren't cost productive. I've been talking to him off and on about attempting an actual meat rabbit but would really like to learn more.
ReplyDeleteI already receive Marjory's newsletter. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an awesome book...I live in Canada so don't think I can enter...but if I can...please enter me....Thank you!!!

ReplyDeleteOh yay! How much fun would this be. I would love to learn how to more efficiently use the space that we have to grow things we need - not just things we want. I'm constantly adapting our growing to provide things that we will actually use, not just for the novelty of growing something. I'd love to have some professional help in the matter! :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this because my hubby and I are learning to do this. We need all the help we can get! We have big garden, chickens, and are about to get a goat. We are making baby steps.
ReplyDeleteI put up a blog post about this.

ReplyDeleteWe are heading in the homestead direction and devouring every bit of info we can find on the subject. This set would be an awesome addition to our growing resource stash! I am so excited that she is in Texas as most of the magazines and articles we have read pertain more to northern climates and don't always work for Texas.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog. I have one myself about being self-sufficient and provident living. You might want to check it out. ReplyDeleteHI Amy,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the opportunity to win this. I went to the website and would LOVE to win this for ALL of the information included. My husband and I are looking to purchase some land soon and I would love to be more self-sufficient but need more help and knowledge in how much produce we need to plant to sustain us, as well as butchering. Thanks again!

I am really interested in what she has to say about rabbit compared to chickens for meat.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the brief video and am hoping to win this-- to start building my home library and resources.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting...
1. I subscribed to the newsletter and can't wait!
ReplyDelete2. I blogged about it www.crownojewels.blogspot.com
3. I shared on facebook.
4. My comment: I liked the water system and knowing how much water per square foot. I loved her geese swimming under the fruit trees. We have already started doing many of these things, but plan to move in the next year and want to set up life well! I still can't get myself to eat rabbits that I've grown. I can eat a jack rabbit, but oh, they are too cute. I'd rather eat chicken, but maybe I'll get there.
5. Now I'm going out to my garden!
I blogged about this at my blogspot~

ReplyDeleteOne more attempt... I've signed up for her newsletter.
ReplyDeleteI began watching the Austin Tx. clips and it affirms everything I believe is going to happen. I work as a vendor at a major big box store that is in every town you can drive through and the prices of staples and basic necessities like single baby bottles have risen 30% this past week. Food items that are typically under a dollar are now (on average) about $1.27. It's happening and if we don't take a stand and stop buying fake foods and products that are made across the ocean we will never see our jobs back in America. I'm really afraid it's too late.
ReplyDeleteI watched part 1 of her video in between homeschooling my boys and look forward to seeing the rest of it tonight after dinner.
I wasn't surprised but learned America is 12 meals from anarchy. I grew my first garden this year (since I lived at home) and it didn't go great but I learned so much from just having one. I would love to win this set, I learn as I go and this would be a terrific learning for me, my sons and family. Thanks for the opportunity!

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I just watched this DVD two times. We borrowed it from a friend. We really want to get a copy of it, as it was too much to digest in these two times. We are doing a few things like this and plan to move to our 70 acres in TN and implement all of this! It would be a blessing to win a copy of this CD, and it would be put to lots of use in learning to do a lot of these things.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity! I learned that from one buck and three does you can get 90 rabbits! That is a lot of meat. I also learned that sweet potatoes would work well for my rocky soil. I'd love a chance to win this

ReplyDeleteWould love to win this DVD as I garden now but never get the yields I imagine when I first plant.
ReplyDeleteI signed up for Marjory's newsletter.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win this! I think it would really help me to get a better overall picture of what I am shooting for with our homestead. Sometimes I feel so fragmented! Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI tweeted it!
ReplyDeleteWow, this looks like a great resource. I've been considering getting rabbits because I've read that their droppings are one of the richest fertilizers for the garden. If I could also raise rabbits as a meat source for my family that'd be a plus! I'd love to learn how from Marjory's experience.
ReplyDeleteI would like to learn more about poultry. I am hoping to have chickens soon!
ReplyDeleteI liked the FB page.
