Preparedness Challange #22

Welcome to the Preparedness Challenge! Each Saturday is your opportunity to share what you did this week to "get prepared", whether it's something you bought for emergencies, a skill you learned, or something you did to become more sustainable on your own homestead. After all, there's more than one way to prepare and certainly there's more than one reason to, as well.

Our growing season is not very long here, so naturally, season extenders would be a great help. I finally broke down this week and spent some money to purchase supplies to make low tunnels and cover them. For some reason, I've hesitated year after year to spend money on this (don't know why), but not having what I need keeps me from gardening further into the cool weather. And keeps me from getting an earlier start. Why do I procrastinate on this kind of thing? Soon I'll have several low tunnel row covers up and hopefully, something growing under them!

I am pondering how we will tackle the frosts this yr, being in FL they are just random days and in the past we have just thrown sheets and or traps over the plants and/or veggies that require the extra help...I am sure you will love having your low frames to keep your veggies going just that little longer.

  3. We're preparing for a fall garden too. Initially, I had elaborate plans to build a cold frame, but I think it will be simple like your idea. Simple is always easier! Thanks for hosting!

  4. This week, I've planted the first part of the fall garden. It has continued to be over 100 degrees every day and only down to the mid eighties at night, so I can only work a little while in the mornings before it gets too hot. The humidity is terrible, but we are in a very severe drought here in central Texas. No rain in months, but we put out a soaker hose system and have it going. I've planted purple hull peas, brown crowder peas, butternut squash, summer squash, two kinds of lima beans, and green beans, so far. I also ground a little over a quart of mesquite flour, and I have more to go.

  5. Thanks for hosting, Amy. I'm still canning and freezing whatever I can harvest around here. We're up to 30 quarts of green beans now. :-)

    Today I linked up a post on preparing for winter heating season. I know it seems early, but it'll be here before you know it. Now's the time to have regular maintenance done and do any updates - before the heating season hits.
