Meet The New Herd

After 2+ long years of learning about goats and trying to figure out the best way to go about it all, we have finally added three Kinders to our little homestead! I learned the hard way that you really need to be prepared before bringing home an animal, no matter how darling they may seem at the moment and your excitement or motivation to care for them. So I wanted to be sure that we could really do this before I jumped in with both feet. And suddenly, things started falling into place.

I can tell you right now, I've already fallen head over heals for these three! Their personalities are so sweet and they are very loving. The two black goats are wethers and the tan goat is a doe which we hope to breed in the immediate future.

Meet Fiona Bleu...

 Orville...

 And Orion...

What's not to love about these characters?!

So, I still have lots to learn and feel like a total novice at this (which I am!). But so far, we're all getting acquainted quite nicely... with the exception of my oldest golden retriever who wasn't so sure at first, but after a night to sleep on it, I think she's reconsidered her first opinion of them.

A new adventure begins...

  1. Congrates on adding goats to the family...We are truly loving our little Nigerian Dwarfs and there is nothing quite like some goat lovin' to make the day a better one...(my Boots loves to snuggle on my lap lol)

  2. How exciting, Amy! I hate to say, as an urbanite, I only see goats in France, and I would be in love with sweet Fionna if she were in my yard too! Look forward to hearing all about how everyone settles in...

  3. They're adorable! I just know you're loving them. Like I said before in your fencing post, we just got our two pregnant ones about 2 months ago, and they are SO much fun. Full of personality, that's for sure. Enjoy your babies, and try to to stress out over them like I'm doing ;P

  10. Oh my goodness, I have goat envy! They are absolutely adorable. Somehow, though, I don't think our suburban neighbors would be very happy if we added goats to the backyard menagerie...adding six chickens was kind of pushing the limits! Enjoy your new furry friends!

  13. Yay Amy! I am so excited for you. Last time I saw these guys they were really little and their ears were way to big for their heads. They seem to have grown into their ears. Cute!

  15. What will you be using the wethers for? We used to have four wethers (with beautiful, curving horns!) that we were raising for pack goats for backpacking. They were so much fun, until we moved to a temporary home with not enough space, and ended up selling them. Their names were Lichen, Granite, Cirque, and Arete. Other than that or pets, I guess I'm not sure what else wethers would be used for--but I'm not very experienced with animals.

  16. OH so wonderful! You'll love keeping goats. We have nubians like Tasha Tudor used to keep. Now in the goat world you need to get a catalog from Ann at Hoegger's. She is the expert and sooo helpful. She sells an organic wormer all us goat people swear by:-)
    Blessings,
    Suzanne

  17. Renee, for now they are keeping Fiona company, but when she kids, I'm not sure. I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it. Down the road I would like to have some for meat (cover your ears and eyes all you goat lovers!), but I won't do that myself.

  19. I loved keeping goats! We had them for everal years (Nigerian Dwarf) before I went back to work full time and had to pare down my critters.

I milked my gals and the little goats were easy keepers. I, too, was determined to eat the extra boy babies, but, um, well...I never could quite do it. I was weak! But they were so sweet!

  21. Suzanne, Thanks for the info on the wormer. I spent the afternoon pouring over the Hoegger catalog while I was working at the Operation Christmas Child receiving area (when it was slow, of course!).
