Momo Made It Aprons!

I've been looking at the aprons at Joan's "Momo's Retro Fashions" for quite a while, drooling over the gorgeous fabrics, beautiful styles, and excellent craftsmanship. Not sure why I kept putting off making a purchase because an apron is like an essential mom uniform to me. It energizes my spirit and gets me moving! Anyway, this week, I finally gave myself permission to make the purchase. I don't know if it was the two weeks of rainy weather or the green grass and daffodils coming up everywhere that announced spring was here, but something made me feel like a fresh apron was in order - ASAP!

Before I could blink an eye, it arrived in the mail! And inside, such a lovely presentation... kind of made me feel like a domestic queen!

Beautiful! I love this fabric...

That card on the far right is a recipe for Whipping Cream Pound Cake. Looking at the ingredients it reminds me of the old pound cake recipes like my great-grandmother use to make... probably tastes like heaven and will add a few pounds to my hips!

I think the fact that Joan's uses fabrics that are fresh and modern looking but with a nod to the past, is what gives her aprons that special touch I was looking for. I wanted something kind of vintage or retro, but I didn't want to look like I was wearing my grandmother's apron, either. Check out some of these other cute styles and fabrics...

Can you tell I had trouble choosing one? I may have to get another one later in the summer! If you want to see more, you're going to need to go over to her etsy store and drool over there for a while!

And you know another thing I'm going to love about my new apron? Since it's made out of 100 percent cotton, the more I wash it, the better it's going to get! Soft and comfy, just like grandmother's. But this time it will be mine!

  2. Look at that Momo! Everybody needs a little Momo! LOL! It looks awesome, Amy! May your every step tinkle like fairy bells, and your apron shimmer like... umm, like...fairy dust! :)
(can you tell it's been a long night?)
Love the new header, by the way!

  4. These aprons are very cute and look well made. Sewing an apron was one of the first sewing projects we made in High School back when sewing was a mandatory course for girls. Really only... hmm I was 13 maybe a few years ago.

  5. Oh, I went over and checked out her website and WOW! Yes, my grandmother wore an apron every day and I have 3 of hers...soft, soft, soft! I may have to order one, too!

  6. I am so thrilled to have found your blog!

I gave up a lucrative blog two years ago after a MORE lucrative job offer sprang from, of course, my blog! I miss blogging, but I don't have time anymore to write professionally AND man the bull horn of preparedness on a blog. I turned my message back on myself, burned my television, moved to the country and began swinging the hammer on the Ark that God called me to build. I plan to feed my neighbors when oil costs leave bare the shelves of the local MegaMart.

Picking through your archives and lucious photographs is a guilty pleasure I allow myself after a hard day of writing, homemaking and homesteading.

I wear my grandmother's aprons with pride, but now I can retire them and not feel cheated. Perhaps I shall hang them on my kitchen windows as "curtains" -- a tangible reminder of her Depression Era ethos.

Thank you again for your sensitivity to educated women who give it all up and turn their hearts and hands toward home. And Him.

    Be well,
    Janie

  8. Oh, my goodness! Please forgive that typo in my comment above! It's still dark out because it's so early here and blogger has a glitch in it that won't allow me to see the first row on any comment I type! I keep thinking they'll get it fixed but I guess I'm going to have to contact them. That's quite an embarrassing typo!

  9. I just love aprons. They are so much fun to make and wear. The color choices in the aprons above are beautiful. My small town doesn't have a fabric store, and our Walmart has a very small supply and it is only available at times, and then it's one small table. A question, where do you all get fabric? Do you order it online? Just curious, I know lots of people who live in rural areas love to sew and I'm just wondering where do they find fabric? Anyway, I know you'll get years of enjoyment from your gorgeous new moms uniform. God Bless!

  10. Purrrrfect!!
I just went to the fabric store the other day and bought fabric to make aprons for my granddaughter ages 11 9 and 6 the idea is to teach them to use a sewing machine. (Since I am mother to two of them and the other ones mother doesn't sew the honor falls to me. I love it!)However after we got home I relized that in all the excitement (chaos) of them picking out their fabric i had not bought any for me.
So guess what I just did? I went to momos and bought one for myself!!! Im thrilled!!!
    Thanks for posting this.
    Blessings

  12. happy momma, I usually wait until I make a trip to town and get my fabric there. We have a big quilting community so even though our town is small, we have two fabric stores that are great! I'll also wait until I go to the Big City at times, but my local store is really just as good. And I have ordered some on line - specifically when I needed more of something I couldn't find.

  14. I love those apron and I'm going to sit down and work out a pattern. I have old feed sack material and they would be lovely as aprons.
I go to the occasional estate sale and have family members who go to auctions all the time. They get boxes of material and quilt scraps for a dollar than bring it to me. I have stacks of pieces precut, if only I knew what for... I use them for little projects. I have a make it do or do without attitude. Or maybe I'm just cheap and justify my methods!

  15. Happy Momma and Amy, thanks for this! I live so far from anywhere that I wonder where everyone gets their fabric! All we have is a Walmart, 60 minutes away! And the choice is awful. I think I'll have to get prepared for a trip into a big city one day! But I don't want to pay too much either! Hmmm. Ebay? Craig's List? Any other options I don't know about? Very inspiring Amy! You've changed my mind about my childhood Singer sewing machine!

  16. Very cute. I'm looking for a full apron that does not hang around my neck. It needs to criss cross in the back. I'll keep looking.

  18. Amy, the apron you bought is made out of the same fabric I bought and made my kitchen valance with! So funny!

  19. I feel better after reading your blog and the comments. I love aprons and always wear one. In my family and my husband's family I am the only one. It started when my best friend got me one. Despite being called "Grandma" I stick to my aprons. I will be checking out Momo's.

  22. These are adorable! I love the look of aprons, but often forget to wear them as I'm in & out of the kitchen so much during the day. But I splurged and just bought myself an early Mother's Day present from them! Can't wait for it to get here! Think it will help in feeling like spring:)

  23. I have several aprons, one that has a picture that my daughter drew in elementary school, and I chose an apron so I would always be able to show off her picture! Another apron was my late mother-in-laws and it is very lacy and pretty. I'll have to check these out, although I might not want to wipe my hands on them!

  24. I love aprons. Half the time I forget to wear them. I get knee deep in a project and think..... I should have put an apron on!

  25. FYI - I found an apron that doesn't hang around your neck. Rather, it cris crosses on my back. Chef's Catalog offers the "comfort" apron:

This is a fantastic find for someone like me that cannot tolerate anything around their neck.

  26. Those are some elegant aprons. I will have to look into getting one of those. I really like the bright colors on them. My apron is getting pretty old and I think that it is time for a new one. I really like aprons that have pockets that are big enough for small copper cookware .
